The pool shop shuffle
You drive in, wait for a test and leave with a bag of products. Standing at the pool with a measuring cup, the instructions don't feel so clear.
Test, and Your Pool Mate tells you exactly what to add, in grams and millilitres for your litres. It says when the grandkids can jump in, and keeps a dated water record your warranty can rely on.

Ask the neighbour, the forum and the shop about cloudy water and you'll get three fixes. None of them know your litres or your readings.
A cracked surface or a dead chlorinator, and someone asks how the water's been kept. The shop printouts went in the bin months ago.
Your Pool Mate fixes all three — from your own phone, in your own backyard.
Pool builders' structural warranties often run for years, and equipment makers can ask for water chemistry records before they honour a claim. Pool shops rarely give you a copy you can keep. Your Pool Mate does.
Your Pool Mate keeps the record; it doesn't decide a claim. Check your own warranty's terms.
No chemistry degree. No guessing. Plain English, sized to your pool.
One number out of 100, then a straight answer: swim-ready, hold off, or test first. Conservative on purpose — grandkids swim in this pool.
Alkalinity first, pH next, chlorine last — with the exact amount for your litres, a safety note, and how long to wait. Tap "I added it" as you go.
Photograph your pool shop's test and the readings fill themselves in. Check them, save, done. Or just say them out loud.
Add what you've bought — or photograph the receipt. The plan uses it first and tells you when you've already got enough.
Only what the shed can't cover, rounded to the bottle or bag you usually buy. Send it to your phone before you head out.
Before it tells you to buy liquid chlorine, Your Pool Mate works out what your cell can make and says how far to turn it up. Salt targets follow your chlorinator model.
See your score over time and what you actually spent, from prices you typed — never guessed. Watch the corrective doses shrink as the pool settles.
Pick a day and get a weekly reminder, plus a monthly report of how the pool went.
Backwash, baskets, salt cell, pump hours for the season — the jobs that go with the pump, filter and chlorinator you own.
Green, cloudy, stinging eyes, foam or stains — what causes it and what to do, step by step, even before your first test.
Litres, surface, and chlorine, salt or mineral. Not sure of the litres? It works them out from length, width and depth.
Type it, say it, or snap the pool shop printout. You check every number before it's saved.
Your score, the swim call, and exactly what to add — in order. Tap "I added it" and re-test tomorrow.
No test kit yet? Most pool shops test your water free. Snap their printout and Your Pool Mate does the rest.
Your Pool Mate works alongside your pool shop. Bring their test home, see what it means for your litres, use what's already in the shed, and buy only the rest.

Green water is almost always algae. It takes hold when free chlorine drops below 1.0 ppm — usually because strong UV, heavy use, warm water or low stabiliser (cyanuric acid) burns the chlorine off faster than it's replaced.
The fix is to shock with a high dose of chlorine, brush the walls and floor, and run the filter until it clears, which can take several days. Testing weekly and keeping stabiliser at 30–50 ppm is what stops it coming back.
Safe means free chlorine between 1.0 and 3.0 ppm, pH between 7.2 and 7.6, and clear water. Below 1.0 ppm chlorine the water isn't properly sanitised; above 5.0 ppm it can irritate eyes and skin.
Clear water can still be short of chlorine, so the only way to know is to test. Your Pool Mate gives a plain safe-to-swim or hold-off call from your latest test.
Free chlorine should sit between 1.0 and 3.0 ppm. In an uncovered outdoor pool with stabiliser (30–50 ppm), aim for about 3.0 ppm — stabiliser holds some chlorine back, and NSW public-pool rules use 3.0 ppm for stabilised outdoor pools.
Keep your pool under a cover? Many covered pools run without stabiliser, and 1.5–2.0 ppm is plenty there and kinder to the cover. Combined chlorine (total minus free) should stay under 0.2 ppm; at 0.5 ppm or more the pool needs shocking.
pH measures how acidic or alkaline the water is, on a 0–14 scale. The right range is 7.2–7.6. Low pH stings eyes, corrodes equipment and burns through chlorine. High pH makes chlorine far less effective and causes cloudiness and scale.
Total alkalinity (80–120 ppm) is the water's ability to resist pH swings. Too low and pH jumps around with rain, chemicals or heavy use. Too high and pH is hard to bring down, with cloudy water as a side effect. Correct alkalinity first, then fine-tune pH.
Usually one of three things: high pH making the chlorine less effective, not enough filtration, or high combined chlorine (chloramines) that means the pool needs shocking. Test every reading, not just chlorine — more chlorine in water at pH 8.0 won't do much.
At least weekly in spring and summer, twice a week in heavy use, very hot weather or after rain. Fortnightly is usually enough in winter. Regular testing is the simplest way to avoid big corrective doses — and it builds your record.
After chlorine or pH adjusters, wait at least four hours with the pump running, then re-test. After shocking, wait until free chlorine is back under 5.0 ppm. Always follow the product label.
Pool builder and equipment warranties can ask for evidence the water was looked after, and a dated record helps when you sell the house. Pool shops rarely give you a copy you can keep. Your Pool Mate saves every test and dose with its date, shows when a reading was corrected, and exports a PDF, a spreadsheet or a share link.
